Each shield is made to order and handcrafted by J in the United States. Please allow 3 to 6 weeks for completion. J builds these shields between traveling to and preparing for Renaissance Faires and Viking Festivals, which is how he supports and provides for his family. Drawing inspiration from authentic Viking craftsmanship, our shields capture the battle-ready functionality and appearance of those carried by ancient Norse warriors. About King Canute:
The real King Canute the Great ruled over England, Denmark, Norway, and parts of Sweden in the early 11th century, forging what many call the North Sea Empire. Known for his cunning, political savvy, and military might, Canute balanced Viking warrior roots with strategic diplomacy. His reign brought a rare era of peace to the British Isles after decades of Norse raids. Though often mythologized—like the tale of him commanding the tide to show the limits of kingly power—his impact on Viking and European history was very real.

Inspired by History:
While we utilize some modern tools and finishes, we take immense pride in crafting shields that reflect the historical spirit of the Viking Age. Each shield is built from real pine planks fastened together with hand-cut wrought iron nails, giving it an authentic weight, sound, and feel when raised.

Real Rawhide Edges:
We use real rawhide the way real Vikings did—to add both strength and aesthetic depth to each shield. The rawhide is secured in place with cut tacks; as it dries, it tightens, pulling the boards together under tension and reinforcing the shield’s overall strength.

Combat-Grade Shield Boss:
Each umbo (shield boss) is hand-forged from 14-gauge steel, based on historic designs. They’re functional, durable, and visually grounded in history.

Leather-Wrapped Handle:
The central handle is leather-wrapped for a secure, comfortable grip—ready for reenactment, sparring, or display.
